Over the festive weeks
How Christmas changes your bin collections
Every council publishes its own Christmas bin collections, so your dates depend on where you live. Most follow a similar pattern.
Collections usually run as normal until Christmas week. It's a good time to check your council's festive dates and get your recycling out, as boxes and packaging pile up fast.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day collections usually move, often by a day or two, and the rest of the week can shift with them. Some councils add catch-up days, including Saturdays.
New Year's Day collections usually move too. Some councils keep a revised schedule into the first days of January, so check before you assume things are back to normal.
Many councils pause garden waste over Christmas, often for one to three weeks. Some pause it again in early January while they collect real Christmas trees.

Christmas trees
How to recycle your real Christmas tree
Many councils collect real Christmas trees in early January, usually on your garden waste day or from drop-off points in parks and car parks. Take off every decoration first, and cut bigger trees into smaller pieces. If you have a garden waste bin, you can usually cut the tree up and put it inside with the lid closed. Artificial trees can't go in garden waste. Some councils and charities also run collections you can book.
