Using your caddy
Food caddy tips: liners, smells and what stays out
The basics are the same everywhere, but some rules change from council to council. Here's what to know, and what to check.
If it isn't food, it doesn't go in.
What to do
Take food out of its packaging first. Keep liquids like milk, soup and gravy out of the caddy.
Good to know
Compostable packaging and coffee pods usually can't go in, even if the label says compostable. Garden waste and pet waste stay out too.The rules on liners vary more than anything else.
What to do
Check what your council accepts before you buy liners. Look for the seedling logo on compostable liners.
Good to know
Some councils only accept compostable liners. Others accept newspaper, and some let you reuse bread bags or carrier bags. A few say food can go in loose.A warm week can make a caddy unpleasant.
What to do
Empty your kitchen caddy into the outdoor bin often. Keep the outdoor bin's lid locked. Put it out every week, even when it isn't full.
Good to know
Wrapping meat and fish scraps in newspaper helps, if your council allows newspaper. Some caddies are dishwasher safe.Flats often share a larger food bin.
What to do
Use your kitchen caddy as normal and empty it into the shared food bin. Ask your landlord or building manager if you can't find one.
Good to know
Shared food bins are usually kept in the same area as your other communal bins.Your caddy belongs to the council.
What to do
Request a replacement on your council's website. Leave your caddy behind when you move house.
Good to know
Some councils let you pick up a new caddy in person, for example from a library.Never miss food waste day
