Product Engineer

London – full-time

About Loci

Loci is a community platform that empowers residents, local councils and businesses to connect, collaborate and co-create better neighbourhoods. Our mobile and web apps give councils the tools to engage citizens, help residents share hyper-local news and services, and enable small businesses to reach their neighbours—all in one, easy-to-use interface.

Role summary

As a Product Engineer you’ll own key features end-to-end, from ideation with Product & UX, through design, implementation and deployment, to measurement and iteration. You’ll be a hands-on coder and have a deep understanding of the needs of our users – helping us scale Loci across hundreds of UK councils and millions of users.

What you’ll do

  • Build and ship user-facing features in our React (web) and React Native (mobile) codebases
  • Design & evolve our backend services (.NET, AWS)
  • Collaborate daily with cross-functional teams to ideate, experiment, develop and own initiatives
  • Ensure quality through test-driven development, pair programming, production testing and performance monitoring
  • Drive technical decisions on architecture, scalability, security and design
  • Measure impact by instrumenting analytics, A/B tests and feeding learnings back into future initiatives
  • Mentor more junior engineers and help grow our engineering culture

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years’ professional software engineering, ideally in B2C or B2B2C environments
  • Experience with native app development, as well as distributed systems at scale
  • Experience building and scaling real-time community/group messaging systems, e.g. using WebSockets or MQTT, and backing these with technologies like Redis Pub/Sub, Apache Kafka, or AWS SNS/SQS for high-throughput, low-latency chat
  • Strong front-end skills: React, React Native, Next.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, responsive design
  • Solid back-end experience: .NET/C#, REST/GraphQL APIs, serverless patterns on AWS
  • A product mindset: you care about solving problems, not specific implementations. You understand the value of experimentation, validation and shipping quickly & safely
  • Excellent communication: you’ll work cross-functionally every day

Nice to have

  • Experience with GIS or location-based services (Mapbox, Google Maps SDK)
  • Previous work in civic-tech, local government or community-facing apps
  • A wide range of experience in either different industries or different sized companies

Benefits & perks

  • Competitive salary
  • Flexible hours & hybrid office setup in London
  • A brand new laptop (Mac or Windows), pension and 28 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
  • Leadership that values candor and empathy in a high-autonomy environment
  • Regular team socials, hack days and offsites
